Cuttack: It seems the touchy issue of whether boys or girls would occupy the contentious East Hostel of Ravenshaw University is going to be stretched further even as the State High Court is adjudicating on it.

On Thursday, when a former student leader of the prestigious institution filed a miscellaneous case seeking HC intervention for ensuring congenial academic ambience inside the campus, the university authorities filed an affidavit opposing the HC-appointed peace committee report.

The High Court appointed peace committee on Ravenshaw University last week submitted its final report to the court suggesting that the East Hostel located inside the campus of the varsity should continue as a boys' residency as before.

The students feel they have been cheated by the State government

We feel as if we are in exile staying in a dilapidated building, says a student

“The government should restrain itself from further denting the pride of the Millennium city”

Cuttack: The foreign students of Ravenshaw University who returned last week are reportedly unhappy with the present accommodation provided to them by the State government in Bhubaneswar. The suggestion for relocating these students once again in Cuttack is mounting. The Cuttack Bachao Committee, an outfit comprising intellectuals of the city on Thursday demanded that all the 59 Afghan students who left the city on January 18 for security reasons should be provided proper accommodation by the State government in Cuttack itself. “Cuttack is known worldwide for having a unique universal brotherhood having a strong bond of moral fibre where people from all religions and all regions coexist in peace and harmony. For over one thousand years, the city has provided shelter and livelihood to all those who have come here to settle temporarily or permanently. The people of the city cannot distance themselves from the foreign students who have already stayed here for over one and half years over a small and trivial matter”, said the convener of the outfit Subash Singh on Thursday. The government should find a proper place to accommodate all the foreign students till they complete their ongoing courses in Ravenshaw University here; Singh said adding that the government should restrain itself from further denting the pride of the Millennium city.

Meanwhile, the foreign students who have been provided accommodation at a far-off place from the city in Bhubaneswar feel that they have been cheated by the State government. “We feel as if we are in exile staying in a dilapidated building here in Bhubaneswar which is located at an isolated place. We are also unable to find proper private accommodations here”, said an Afghan student requesting to remain anonymous.

Banda rape case: charges dropped, victim freed - India News - IBNLive

Banda rape case: charges dropped, victim freed - India News - IBNLive

New Delhi: Two versions of the same CB-CID Report by Uttar Pradesh's top administrator cabinet Secy Shahshank Shekhar Singh resulted in the rape victim languishing in jail for the past one month finally being bailed out on Saturday.

A clear reflection that on Mayawati's 55th Birthday it was not her new policy announcements which dominated but the poor planning of the State government in the Banda Rape case.

The moot point is that on Thursday when CM Mayawati ordered the arrest of her own MLA Purushottam Dwivedi for raping a dalit minor, the state government was quoting the CBCID report to indicate that the victim was also accused of stealing Dwivedi's phone. Now a day after massive protests for sending Dwivedi to the same jail where the victim was also lodged, what prompted this change of heart from the state administration.

For one the Allahabad High court's decision of seeking protection for the victim on its own. Even on a holiday the court took cognisance of the victim's torture and asked the State to provide her with security.

And then the threat from the congress of moving the high court on Monday seeking her bail. Mayawati's options were limited..She had to act before anyone else could have been credited with helping the victim...

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewary, said, "The state of law and order is totally in shambles."

With just an year left for assembly elections the manner in which this case has been handled is bound to provide plenty of ammunition to Mayawati's opponents.

Legal initiatives by Modi:
Praising his administration, he charted out three initiatives that has led to a sharp decrease in pendency of legal cases in various Gujarat court.

"Before starting this initiative, Gujarat had a pendency of 45 lakh (4.5 million cases). Had we let that continue, by now it would have ballooned to 1.5 crore cases. But because of the efforts of the state government and judiciary it has now come down to 18 lakh cases (1.8 million). We are running 100 evening courts and the entire judiciary too is working for extra hours," he said.

To solve the legal issues of the people of Gujarat his government took three initiatives, he said.

"One, we requested our courts to increase their working hours by 30 minutes to which they agreed. Secondly, we asked them if our courts could reduce the duration of their vacation by a week; that too was accepted happily.

"The third thing was our courts' infrastructure would lie idle after 5 pm. In a poor nation like ours, idling of such infrastructure is a huge waste of resources. So we started evening court sessions from 6 pm to 10 pm where people who work through the day but still have to appear before various courts for their cases could easily appear after completing their office hours. Thus poor people in Gujarat earn their livelihood in the daytime and appear in the court in the evening," he said.
