Banda rape case: charges dropped, victim freed - India News - IBNLive
New Delhi: Two versions of the same CB-CID Report by Uttar Pradesh's top administrator cabinet Secy Shahshank Shekhar Singh resulted in the rape victim languishing in jail for the past one month finally being bailed out on Saturday.
A clear reflection that on Mayawati's 55th Birthday it was not her new policy announcements which dominated but the poor planning of the State government in the Banda Rape case.
The moot point is that on Thursday when CM Mayawati ordered the arrest of her own MLA Purushottam Dwivedi for raping a dalit minor, the state government was quoting the CBCID report to indicate that the victim was also accused of stealing Dwivedi's phone. Now a day after massive protests for sending Dwivedi to the same jail where the victim was also lodged, what prompted this change of heart from the state administration.
For one the Allahabad High court's decision of seeking protection for the victim on its own. Even on a holiday the court took cognisance of the victim's torture and asked the State to provide her with security.
And then the threat from the congress of moving the high court on Monday seeking her bail. Mayawati's options were limited..She had to act before anyone else could have been credited with helping the victim...
Congress spokesperson Manish Tewary, said, "The state of law and order is totally in shambles."
With just an year left for assembly elections the manner in which this case has been handled is bound to provide plenty of ammunition to Mayawati's opponents.
